Background:
Jeremiah Baumann is the program director for Environment
Oregon. A native of Billings, Montana, who grew up in Pasco, Washington, Jeremiah joined Environment Oregon's staff in the spring of 2005 after
working on the national staff of the Student PIRGs' New Voters Project, where he
directed strategic planning and non-student outreach efforts for the project to increase voter turnout among 18-24-year-olds.
Jeremiah joined U.S. PIRG in 1998 as an environmental associate in Washington, DC. As director of U.S. PIRG’s federal Toxics
and Environmental Health program from 2000 to 2003, he directed successful
campaigns to expand toxics right-to-know programs and, in the wake of Sept. 11,
2001, launched a campaign to make communities safer from potential terrorist
activity by requiring chemical companies to adopt safer chemicals and processes.
Since starting at Environment Oregon, Jeremiah has directed successful efforts
to adopt Oregon’s Clean Cars program, to cut global
warming pollution from new cars and trucks 30% by 2016, and to establish one of
the country’s strongest renewable energy standards, requiring 25% renewable
energy by 2025. He currently directs Environment Oregon’s efforts to establish a
mandatory cap on global warming pollution and to create the first network of
marine reserves and protected areas off the Oregon coast. Jeremiah serves on the
governor’s Energy Efficiency Working Group and the Transportation & Land Use
Committee of the Oregon Global Warming Commission, and co-chairs a task force on
air emissions from agriculture facilities. Mr. Baumann is a graduate of
Yale
University.
