Senate squashes cleaner-car effort

As the new home of OSPIRG's environmental work, Environment Oregon can be contacted regarding this article.

Oregon has a long history of forward thinking on issues of sustainability.

So it is extremely disheartening to see that the Oregon Senate has approved a Department of Environmental Quality budget that prohibits DEQ from "adopting or enforcing California's stricter vehicle emissions standards" ("Senate votes to keep DEQ from lowering car emissions," July 29).

This budget is a leap in the wrong direction, rejecting an opportunity for Oregon to once again lead the country toward cleaner air, more efficient cars and less reliance on fossil fuels.
