Session's green legislation praised - The Register-Guard (new window)

SALEM - The Senate's overwhelming approval Thursday of a package of incentives to increase the production and use of biofuels marked a clean sweep of accomplishments on environmental and energy policy. The 24-3 vote all but capped a legislative session that has seen the passage of bills to expand recycling, increase production of green power, and restrict the potential development of farm and forest land.

SALEM -- Whether you live in a city or small town, every Oregonian will have access to free and easy recycling for your old television and computer under a bill that's headed to the governor. After several years of rejecting electronics recycling proposals, Oregon lawmakers wholeheartedly embraced the idea in 2007. The Senate voted unanimously and without debate Tuesday to approve House Bill 2626. The bill previously sailed through the House. It now goes to the governor for his promised signature.

SALEM — If you buy bottled water, you’ll be paying a nickel deposit on each container starting in January 2009. The Oregon House voted 42-16 Thursday for SB 707, which updates the state’s 1971 Bottle Bill by adding water containers to the beer and soda cans and bottles which require a deposit.

SALEM -- Oregonians will have to shell out a nickel deposit on every bottle of water they buy, beginning Jan. 1, 2009, as part of the first major revision in 36 years of Oregon's landmark bottle bill law. Legislation that adds water bottles to carbonated soft drink and beer containers requiring a nickel redeemable deposit sailed through the House on Thursday on a 42-16 vote.
